Contact dermatitis is a common inflammatory disorder. One of its important characteristics is that it can be prevented, meaning that identifying the causative agent and eliminating the contact dermatitis represent the cure for the eczema. It is classified as irritant dermatitis or allergic contact dermatitis, in which a delayed hypersensitivity mechanism is involved. Patch testing is the gold standard for diagnosing sensitivity in cases of contact allergy. In clinical practice, suspected hypersensitivity to ingredients in personal care products, especially cosmetics, is the most common reason for performing contact testing. Therefore, updating a range of cosmetics is important, as the industry that produces these products is constantly evolving. It should be noted that some cosmetics are not intended to replace the base series for a specific region, as most cosmetic components have such a significant prevalence (>1%) that they justify their presence in the corresponding base series. Thus, the cosmetic series should complement another base series when indicated by the specialist. The article published in this issue of Revista Alergia México presents a proposal. Various scientific articles on recent case studies from leading centers worldwide were evaluated, and a study of the prevalence of haptens in commercial products in internationally recognized databases was added. This review can foster debate among allergists, with the goal of achieving an increasingly better approach for patients.
